System:  Raw Water Sewer System – NYC DEP
Location:  Queens, NY
Components:  Pump Casing Repair

The Problem

Metro received an urgent request for emergency repairs to one of the DEP’s main lift station submersible pumps. During the contractors removal of the pump, the pump casing was dropped resulting in a gaping hole. The pump had to be repaired and put back into service while the new station was being complete.

The pump casing material is cast iron which does not lend itself to weld repairs. A new casing would take months to arrive onsite.

Our Solution

Metro recommended the DEP to send the motor of the pump to their approved motor repair vendor. The pump casing was delivered to Metro’s service shop for repairs. Metro proposed to repair the casing by fabricating steel plates to duplicate the shape and contour of the pump case.

Workscope

  • Purchase steel for repairs
  • Fabricate various sections to repair missing section of casing
  • One of the main challenges was how to attach the fabricated sections to the cast iron casing. Metro elected to use a series of drilled through holes with nuts and bolts to attach the plates. Also, drilled and tapped holes were located along the flange area of the casing to secure the plates.

Results

Metro was able to repair the casing in three days, delivering the pump casing to the site before the submersible pump motor was complete. The pump was assembled, installed and returned to service until the new pump station was able to come online.
